It is written for juveniles age 8 and older. I enjoyed the story. I felt like it really drew me in and the characters were really fleshed out. The story is based on a boy who receives an inheritance from an older great-uncle. He is gifted a house with the understanding that he will complete a few minor tasks in order to keep it. Unfortunately, a creepy neighbor wants the house also and Tony wonders if he would kill to do so. Throughout the story more boys are introduced who also have a connection to the house and each other. I recommend this book for boys and girls in the pre-teen age group. I think that it's a highly enjoyable read with some history thrown in without being too overly dramatic about it. The story does have some inconsistencies with real history but the author does specify which parts are not necessarily truth.

The Peculiars by Maureen Doyle McQuerry

While not quite like anything I’ve ever read before, thisbook was very good. Set in an alternate1800s, the characters were engaging and the backstory was completed so skillfullythat I never felt lost. I enjoyedwatching Lena grow into her ‘peculiarities’ such as they were. After deciding to look for her long lostfather in the strange land of Scree, Lena meets a cast of very differentcharacters on her travels. Jimson is anunlikely librarian in a house with a very mysterious master. I really enjoyed this book and the ending wasmost delightful. It always gives me awarm feeling inside when bad guys get their just desserts. I don't normally read romance novels but the first story (White Dawn) really drew my attention. In this novel, Swift Foot has returned to his tribe to do what is expected of him-marry a woman from a neighboring tribe selected for him by the tribal council. This act is essential to his ascension to the role of chief. At first, he doesn't believe he can find love with this strange girl/woman named Small Bird. She, on the other hand, believes that they are destined to be together. There is drama, romance, sex and violence in this book. The ending of the book leads into the third book in the series and I can't wait to read it also. The story follows the couple as they join in marriage and deal with the doubt of their fellow tribe members on the leadership of Swift Foot and the safety of Small Bird and the rest of the tribe in the face of a threat from another Indian tribe. The culmination of the book watches as the fight between tribes comes to a head and it is discovered that the fight has been aggravated by a member of their own tribe. I think that this book is definitely worth picking up.

Wordless Wednesday

Rough Country by John Sandford

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Virgil Flowers is definitely one of a kind in this book by Sandford. I loved the story and even though I thought I knew who may have been behind the murders, I was still very surprised at the way everything played out in the end. I guess you never know what love will drive you to do. I had my suspicions about what may have happened in the past but Sandford has a way of showing you what happened in the best, most delicious way possible. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger. Yes, they solved the immediate issue with the criminal at hand but who were those other people and what do they want? I really do think that this book is a great one. The author really knows how to make people laugh at the sheer craziness of the book.

Wordless Wednesday-Self explanatory

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

I actually listened to this book a while ago and I fell in love with it. If you've read any of the between the numbers books in the Stephanie Plum series, you will already know and love Diesel. Janet Evanovich has a way of making you fall in love with her characters from the very beginning of the book. Written in the same sense of humor as the Plum series, this book will keep you intrigued the entire way through. I feel like I need a little Diesel in my life.

Switched by Amanda Hocking

I received this book through as an advance reader's copy. I really enjoyed it. It was a nice change from the vampires and werewolves that seem to saturate today's media. I liked that it was part of the supernatural world but also a part that I was not familiar with currently. The story begins with a seemingly normal girl trying to find her way into a normal life after moving yet again. As the back story appears, we learn there were serious parental issues and she is now living with her older brother and aunt. After meeting a mysterious guy at her new school, she learns that she may be what is called a changeling. Without giving too much of the story away, I will say that the book was engaging and kept me very interested. I read this book in a matter of hours and it was very hard for me to walk away. The ending was one that I won't forget. It left me wanting more, as all good books should. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars only because I feel like there could have been a little more depth and it moved so quickly. Wendy was lost in the new life she found and I was equally lost because of the lack of backstory at times and the quickness of the chapters. I do think that this story is definitely worth reading though. I highly recommend it.

Life, interrupted.

I honestly don't know what to think. The book was convoluted and almost impossible to follow. I don't know what the author was aiming for, nor whether or not he attained it. The snippets of story left out big gaping holes and I felt lost the whole time. The story is set up in minuscule glimpses into the lives of three different characters who cross paths during the story. This story would appeal to readers who like horror, or gory stories told in a very unique way. Personally, this is not something I would read again. I don't absolutely hate it but I just felt like something was missing. It's probably from what I came in to the story expecting-a fully told story that has a beginning, middle and end. That's not at all what this story contains.

The Hypnotist by MJ Rose

This book was a bit of a surprise. I did not honestly think that I would like it as much as I did. The main character has many levels. He is consumed with the death of his childhood girlfriend. The book involves past lives and how they relate to the present. The statue that is a main part of the story is called Hypnos. It was created in Persia long ago. The Iranian government has claimed ownership even though it is currently in the possession of the Met. It was left to the Met by a donor who claimed that he received the statue through legal means. The Iranian government concocts a plan to get the statue back, legally or no. Another group learns that the statue is connected to some things called Memory Tools. One of the interesting things in the story is that we learn so little about the tools. They are something on the edge and somehow in the middle of the book. The story is slow in places but it is definitely something that I would recommend to anyone who likes mysteries or any story out of the ordinary.
Dark and Disorderly by Bernita Harris

I received this book as an advance reader through Carina Press. Many thanks to them for introducing me to this wonderful character and story. I absolutely adored Lillie. She was strong in the face of many obstacles. This was a very intriguing novel. I enjoyed the fact that even though John Thresher, the psi-investigator, was very handsome, Lillie did not throw herself upon his "masterful manhood." She was a very strong character in her own right without depending on a man to make her that way. Lillie is what's called a Talent, which means that she has powers that can't be explained. She works for the city as a paranormal who's job it is to be, well, a ghostbuster. Her job is not an easy one and it is not as understood as she would like. Ghosts have become a menace in the world recently and something has to be done. Her husband recently died under suspicious circumstances and she is haunted by a series of events that are deadly and not accidents. I was entranced and read this book really quickly. I can't wait for the next step in this series. I hope this is a series because I would love to see more of Lillie and John Thresher. The author left just enough unanswered questions to make this be something I would look forward to reading. Well done, Ms. Harris.
The Mermaid's Mirror by L K Madigan

As always, I read this book through netgalley.com. It was an interesting premise for a story but it just didn't hold my interest. I slogged through it but never really got into it as I normally do. The story is about a girl who lives with her dad and stepmom near the beach. Her dad won't teach her to surf even though he was a pro once upon a time. She goes against her dad's wishes and learns how anyway. She finds out that her mom is not gone like she believed and enters a new world. She has to make an important decision about where she belongs. I couldn't give this story as much praise as I'd like. The writing was slow in some parts. I'd give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
Adios Nirvana by Conrad Wesselhoeft

Adios Nirvana follows a teenage boy and his pathway through the grief of losing his twin brother. Jonathan carries a lot of guilt concerning his brother's, Telemachus (or Edward) death. He almost flunks out of high school and lives on Red Bull and No-Doz. During this painful period in his life, his mom, Mimi, tries to start a wedding chapel in their home. Jonathan mainly depends on his Thicks who are his and Telly's life long friends. They do typical teenage boy things but show a large amount of insight into the fact that Jonathan is having a hard time moving past Telly's death. Since he is failing out of school, the principal and his mentor come up with a plan for him to pass. He must meet with David, a retired soldier who is dying and write his life story. At first Jonathan does not want to do this but eventually he meets with David and along the way finds that there is always hope. You just have to keep trying. This was a heartwarming book. It's slow at points but it was definitely worth the read. I enjoyed the ending. I won't give that away here but it was pretty riveting. I felt definite sympathy for the main character. I can't imagine losing a sibling, much less a twin.

The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall by Mary Downing Hahn

Through the generous offering of Net Galley, I was able to read this book before it's September 6 publication date. It is a book written for the pre-teen set and not being a pre-teen myself, I still found this book interesting. The premise of the story is that Florence, orphaned at five by a tragic accident, has been found in an orphanage by her long lost uncle. She comes home to Crutchfield Hall where she is welcomed warmly by her uncle and the staff. Her aunt, however, continuously compares her to someone else and she is found sorely lacking in every area. She then hears about her mysterious cousin, Sophia, who unfortunately passed away in a tragic accident. Since the accident, Sophia's brother James has been closeted in his room "in poor health". As Florence starts to feel more and more on edge, she learns about her cousin Sophia. According to her aunt, Sophia was perfect. According to everyone else, Sophia had some problems. As the story goes on, Sophia begins to haunt Florence and the other members of the household. The conclusion is gripping and was not something I saw coming. I enjoyed the way the author introduced the slightly creepy elements to the story without beating you over the head that this was a horror story. All in all, it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a little fright in their stories.

Multimedia message

Gearing up for a semester of hard work

College starts on Tuesday. Guess I broke that streak, huh? I have an excuse though. Wednesday night I was really sick and still didn't feel quite right on Thursday. Last night I had a wonderful time spending quality time with the hubby. So I do have a valid excuse. However, I do miss writing here. It feels good to be able to say what I have on my mind and know that at least my blog is listening. :)

Today, Zoe and I went to my friend Jamie's baby shower. She's pregnant with her second child, a girl. As Abbie has grown out of things-her bassinet, travel swing, clothing, etc-I have passed it on to Jamie. Today I dropped off another load of things. It makes me feel good to know that she will get lots of use out of the things that I've given her. Abbie no longer needs them but Penelope does. Anyway, Zoe and I had a lot of fun today. It's rare that I get to spend time with my oldest child anymore. It's usual the three of us all the time and with Abbie as the baby, she by default, requires the most attention. I feel like we shortchange Zoe sometimes because she isn't a very needy child and is very independent. But today, it was mommy and Zoe time. All was well and we had a great time, just the two of us. She wore her Cinderella dress over her regular clothes to the party and brought her princess shoes, wand and crown. I've decided it's time to get back into writing again. Maybe relieve some stress. :) We just got home on Thursday from 4 days in the pediatric intermediate care unit at the Children's Hospital in Macon. My youngest was sick with RSV. I've never seen a child struggle for breath like she was. We went to the pedi on Monday morning and he sent us directly to the hospital. The hospital did what they could, including breathing treatments every hour, and she still showed no improvement. It was so scary. Nick took Zoe and went home and Abbie and I settled for a long night at the hospital. Around 6pm that night, the pedi came and looked her over and said he was sending her to the icu in Macon because her body was working so hard for breath that he was afraid she would get too tired and quit breathing.

That took my breath away. I think I went into shock, sitting there, holding my baby girl. I immediately called Nick and when I heard his voice on the other end of the line, I couldn't even speak. I burst into tears and he of course started freaking out. He called my mom and they came rushing back to the hospital. My mom was crying, my brother was crying. He thought she was going to die. Abbie was so sick.

They took her by ambulance to the pediatric intermediate unit. She looked so little on that stretcher. It made my heart hurt to look at her. I couldn't ride with her in the back of the ambulance. It was the longest ride of my life.

When we got to the hospital, they immediately hooked up up to oxygen and chest leads. She hated all those wires but didn't really fight them. I held her nonstop for most of the time. No sleep for four days. On Wednesday we were looking at at least 3 more days at the hospital. She hadn't eaten since 2pm on Monday. They had ivs hooked up but she wanted food, dang it.

Thursday, the nurse let us unhook the chest leads, oxygen thing on her foot and the blood pressure cuff. They also took the iv out because it started leaking at the site. Abbie was one happy baby. She felt so much better and was actually playing with toys. She wanted to get down and take off. The doctor came in while I was at lunch. My mom came to relieve me so I could get food as we couldn't eat in her room. My mom called me and said that they were letting her go home. The doctor said she looked so much better. It was unbelievable. I was so excited to bring my baby home. Abbie is happy and healthy now. 4 breathing treatments a day and check in with the pedi on Monday. Life is good again.

I've found a new home

While browsing around the internet the other day, I happened to find a website called librarything.com. It's awesome. It's an online place to list all the books in your library, complete with a forum, place to write reviews on the books you own, pick up tips on future books to read, etc. One of the major things I like is that they have a place where you can go to get advance copies of books that haven't come out yet. I signed up for a few, not really thinking anything would come of it. Imagine my surprise when I snagged two of them. :D They haven't arrived yet but I am impatiently waiting on them. Once I get them and after they've been read, I'm supposed to do a review. Sounds like fun to me.

I have a new obsession.

I've spent the past few hours poring over this website. http://community.livejournal.com/abandonedplaces/1666954.html

It's freaking addictive. These places wont be around forever.

Getting Older

My birthday is Sunday.

Birthdays aren't fun anymore. This week has been insane. The girls are good, I'm kinda shaky though. It's been very stressful for me to go back to work. I got used to being at home everyday. Our house is a disaster and I probably on got about 5 hours of sleep last night. I wanted to sleep late today but I guess what they say is true. No sleep for the wicked. :) If only I could get Zoe to nap now. Abbie's sleeping, Nick's sleeping. I can't believe 6 weeks has flown by so quickly. Seems like just yesterday I was hugely pregnant and wishing that I could go ahead and have this baby. Now she's here and she's growing every day. I wish that I could stay home with her like I did with Zoe. I didn't go back to work after Zoe until she was a year old. I feel like I'm going to miss everything with Abbie. It makes me want to cry but I know that I don't really have a choice. Nick said he liked me being home too but we can't do it. One good think if that I really like the girls' babysitter. I meet her online and we just really clicked. She kept them today and it worked really well. On Wednesday of next week, I have to become a working adult again. I have mixed feelings about this. Part of me is happy to be going back to work because I like my job. I like what I do. But there's another part of me that is regretful. Part of me that does not want to leave my babies again. I know that's not a possibility though. I have to work. We can't afford for me not to. So next Wednesday will be bittersweet. I will miss being at home but I like the adult conversation I get to have at work.

Things I've realized

1. It is not sexy to wear low riding jeans when you have back fat. And are over...say, 35. And that's going a little far on the age.

2. Pointy toed shoes are not cute. At all.

3. Getting drunk at a bar and shouting "I'm drunk!" is not sexy.

4. I don't know about you but I value sleep. I need sleep. I like sleep. With a new baby, you get no sleep. My oldest is two now. She sleeps through the night, no problem. Yes, it took us about 1 1/2 to get to that point but I enjoyed it. Now we have a newborn who has no respect for mommy's need for at least a little sleep to be able to deal with her older sister. Who knew that being pregnant and working full time and being a full time wife and mother would be so tiring? Zoe is getting bigger and more precocious as the days stretch on. I never know what will come out of her mouth. She was introduced to the joys of play-doh last night. That was a lot of fun. That's what peeing in the potty gets her. Maybe it's working??

Nick is well...Nick. We hit a bumpy patch of just cohabitating and not really being a family. I didn't push it. He finally noticed I wasn't pushing it. Last night we talked and things seem to be looking up. I think it really is the rubber band thing. If I try to pull him closer, I just end up pushing him away but if I leave him alone, he wants to know why. I just let him come back to me. It was actually peaceful to get a little alone time for a while. I think we are back to being husband and wife instead of just Zoe's mommy and daddy. That's what we have to work on. The balance between both of those.

I have to go back to the doctor on the 18th and everything seems to be going fine. We have 74 days to go. Less than 3 months. Is it just me or is this pregnancy flying by? With Zoe I felt like she couldn't get here fast enough. With this one, I really am not doing that. My due date is the end of working outside the house for at least 6 months. I don't know if I can go back to that. I love working. I love having responsibilities and things that depend on me to happen. I love being able to hold conversations with actual adults. I am excited to see what this baby looks like though. Nick wants to do a 3D sonogram but I don't know if we'll do that or not.

We'll see how everything goes.

Going on a trip

I'm finally going to get to meet one of best friends ever online. My life was smooth sailing with the occasional upset due to childhood temper tantrums, broken Barney tapes, and lost cell phones. Now I am the mama to be to a new baby girl, one surly two year old and a husband who acts as if he is dying. Can you say stressful? :)

On Monday, we went in for a sonogram. Everything's fine with the new baby. Heartbeat is good, spinal cord looks good, legs and arms are long. We have a perfect baby girl, complete with enough estrogen to make my husband swear he's running away or going to start taking steroids. Three against one now. I can't help but think that it's poetic justice. His mom had three boys. He was surrounded by testosterone. I told him just to wait until there are three periods going on at once. Then he will really want to run away. :D

A New Home

I've found a new home at gab.daisyfly.com. It's come as a shock to me, and probably everyone else. I guess that's what happens though when your online world exist at the mercy of someone else. I just wanted to say to everyone that I've enjoyed the time that I've spent with all of you. I will definitely miss you. Most of you know how to contact me if you need me or just want to talk.

I'm just a little shell-shocked at the rug being pulled from underneath my feet right now. We had a blast. I'm very sunburned but I made sure to slather my fair haired girl with sunscreen. She did NOT like the water but loved the shower. She kept running and jumping in the mud puddles in the parking lot and then running back to rinse her feet. Then she managed to get away as I was changing her and streaked around the parking lot. LOL Only Zoe.

Wordless Wednesday

Testing, testing, one two three...

I'm new to this. First post and all. Hopefully, I'll find something to talk about. I guess I should do this as an introduction, right? I am a mom to Zoe, wife to Nick and just me. We have another baby on the way-about to make our little family of three become a family of four. I don't know if I'm ready for that but I guess I don't really have a choice right now, right? Ready or not, here comes baby. :)
